A cost review of the Code for Sustainable Homes

Cyril Sweett was commissioned by English Partnerships and the Housing Corporation in August 2006 to produce a report considering the implications of moving from EcoHomes Very Good to the Code for Sustainable Homes (the Code). The report which was published in April 2007, demonstrates the technical and cost implications of adopting the Code at different levels.

Transforming Existing Buildings: The Green Challenge

The research, commissioned by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), looks at the practical steps that can be taken to renovate and refurbish existing commercial building stock to reduce their carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency. Although there may have been a reluctance in the past to adopt energy efficiency measures in existing buildings, this report reveals that even the smallest changes to improving the environmental performance of buildings can have positive results.

   Costing sustainability

One of the principal barriers to the wider adoption of more sustainable design and construction solutions is the perception that these incur additional unwanted costs.

Evidence collected by Cyril Sweett and BRE contradicts this assumption. This information paper summarises the study ‘Putting a price on sustainability’ which identifies “quick wins” where major improvements can be made at low cost, and quantifies the costs associated with a range of sustainable solutions for four building types, using BREEAM/EcoHomes as a simple measure of performance.

EcoHomes, achieving Very Good

A Very Good EcoHomes rating is now a minimal requirement for all housing funded by the Housing Corporation. This guide looks at various locations and provides recommendations for the EcoHomes process; indicative costing for the uplift of Good to Very Good rating and exemplars of how some Housing Associations have already reached or exceeded the Very Good rating.
